The group has expressed an interest in starting a group development project, so let's get started!
This is an opportunity to get your hands dirty with Python in an environment with other Python developers. We'll be using a Distributed Version Control System (DVCS), and I'm going with Mercurial (hg) since that's what the CPython group has decided on (and it's a lot easier than git!). So you'll also get some experience using a DVCS system. I've started trying to use hg, and it seems like the work flows and thinking are quite different than subversion!
This is the first meeting, so we'll need to get some of the details worked out.
Here is your first homework assignment!
How often should we meet to do this? and where (Tampa, Pinellas)?
What project would you propose we work on? We can go around the room and vote on one at the meeting.
What web support do we need (forums, wikis, blogs, issue trackers, etc)? and where do we find these?
Install and start looking at Mercurial and a hosting site (sourceforge and google code now support mercurial, in addition to bitbucket, or ???). Ubuntu has version 1.1.2 as "mercurial" (which is what I loaded), but the latest is 1.2.1.
Since I am the creator of the PyKE project, we may discuss doing something PyKE related. I'm not going to force this down people's throat, but am open to it and could always use help! So if you think you might be even a little interested in PyKE, it wouldn't hurt to do a quick once over on the PyKE site and maybe look at some of the examples. Note that while Ubuntu has a python-pyke package in 9.04, it's an old version, so I would recommend using "easy_install pyke" instead. You'll need to download the examples separately from the sourceforge download area.
“ Good first meeting. We've got all the initial questions answered and will be starting in.
The project that we've picked is developing (in Python) a language for microcontrollers (initially AVR).
We'll continue meeting once a month on the second Saturday, 9AM, at CEA Marketing. ”
